North Carolina Employment Law Attorney

Because North Carolina is an "at will" employment state, employers have the legal right to terminate an employee at any time, generally for any reason. However, employers may not lawfully terminate an employee for reasons that discriminate on the basis of race, age, gender, religion, national origin or handicap. Employers may not lawfully terminate an employee for reasons that violate the public policy of the state of North Carolina. In addition, employees of federal, state or local governments may have certain protections to due process of law (dismissal for just cause) not available to private sector employees. Finally, employees with a written employment agreement may have certain contractual rights that can be enforced.
